With economy struggling to recover, many people who were well to do before are now facing dire consequences, being put in positions they never would thought they would have be in 5 years ago. I’ve come across two instances where people in need of legal counsel were too ashamed by their circumstances to ask for help. Fortunately, one party was able to put their pride aside and it was early enough in the process for an attorney to help them.
However, for the other, they tried to handle the case on their own (FYI, opposing counsels LOVE parties who represent themselves). When asked why they waited so long for help, they said they were too ashamed to ask for it. By the time an attorney was brought in (and only was willing to help them on a VERY limited basis), they had severely prejudiced their own case.
As attorneys, we are here to help. Sure, there are a few bad apples, but most attorneys are genuine and caring; we’re not here to judge you on your past misdeed, but to help you with your situation now.
If you’re faced with some trouble, please seek assistance immediately. If money is a problem, there are several non-profit entities that may be able to assist you, such as Legal Aid and the Public Law Center.
Let me hear your thoughts: have you ever been ashamed to ask for help? Did you ask for help? Did it work out for you?
